so just for fun - what was the first car that got you feeling all hot and bothered and then resulted in a unhealthy lust for autos?

Kinja'd!!!

for me it was the 1988 Lamborghini countache quattro valvole (more on this car in a diff post). This car was my first ever poster on my wall and my first ever case of going weak kneed when i first saw it. In person this car did make me lose my train of thought. Unbelievable - put it next to a aventador and it looks almost edgy enough to be created in this decade and not 25 yrs earlier.

Kinja'd!!!

so what about you Oppo?

When I was two, my neighbour had a Fiero. It was sleek, low, bright red and unlike anything I had ever seen before. I used to go out on the driveway and stare at it. I now know that it isn't a great car, but that doesn't matter. I still want one.

Not very exciting, but this: 1985 535is 5 speed. Because I'd driven other interesting cars before, but this car had a soul, and was genuinely satisfying to drive, unlike anything I'd driven prior. Except maybe a 1995 911. But I was so scared driving the 911 at age 16 that it wasn't the same feeling of connection. The 535 really opened my eyes to the world of truly "good" cars. I still want one.

Two cars. When I was 4 I helped my dad pull his bone stock (I believe the color was gold) 1964 Impala SS Convertible out of a barn where he had stored it for years. He got it running and sold it cheaply to pay for my younger brothers diapers and other childhood things. Little did he know a year or two later the value of that car skyrocketed to the point he can't afford one. That car was one of many 64 Impala SSs he has owned. He still regrets selling it to this day.

The other was my grandfathers 1946 International that I was amazed by when I saw it packed away in his barn back when I was a little kid. I convinced him to pull it out several years ago and drive it about once a week.

When I was 11 I saw a trashed Trans Am at my home towns only restaurant. I fell in love with the burble of exhaust and the bird on the hood.

I had an unhealthy interest in cars when I was in elementary school, in fact my dream job was to become a car customizer (I LOVED Monster Garage.) in middle school I started becoming interested in computers and how they function, and largely became ambivalent to cars (I wanted to buy a Camry.) Then, my sophomore year, my friend got a WRX. I felt the feeling of speed, and talking to him about it brought back why I loved cars so much. Soon after I read Jalopnik and here I am now! Here, have a blob-eye

None of these resulted my enthusiasm as I already was into cars but I'll try to list some cars I thought were really cool as a kid.

I remember seeing a dark purple (or matte black I'm not really sure) '70 or '71 Duster and a bright blue beach buggy with exposed chromed out engine frequently around the neighborhood. From TV and videos I remember a customized Porsche 930 from Knight Rider and a black Can-am race car from Flåklypa Grand Prix

This. Being young, I didn't really know much about a car from 2005. Then one day, playing GT5, I came across it and was just overwhelmed by how fantastic it was in every way - looks, speed, handling. I will always want this car, and thanks to it, I love a lot of other cars as well.

I was raised in car culture since birth. My dad took me to car shows and drag races and truck pulls since before I can remember, so I've been a gearhead my whole life. That being said, a major turning point in my life was when I sold my first car, a gold 1999 Chrysler 300M and bought a black 1995 Eclipse GSX.

My dad had cool cars while growing up, but I didn't really take notice of anything on my own until sitting in the theater with dad, watching the intro to Cannonball run.

I was probably 10 years old.

As soon as I picked my jaw up off the floor, I asked him what kind of car that was. "Lamborghini" he said. And that's the day I started paying attention to his R&T magazines and trying to figure out what terms like "dohc," "ft/lbs," "mild understeer," and "brake fade" meant.

All it took was a batshit car with an batshit exhaust note.

I believe this is the day that all fathers hope for with their sons. One day they will wake up and start asking 1,000 questions a day about this stuff. This is the reason I can't really criticize anything out there that will get kids excited about cars. (things like Aventadors, Veyrons, or Ken Block). I'm sure my Dad thought the Countach was just as silly as I think a Veyron is today - but it planted that seed.

I wish, I only have 2 pictures. He was forced to sell it when I was about 5-6 for financial reasons. I actually retouched/restored these images quite a bit from their original state. I got them printed at a much larger format then the original 3x5 photo from the 80s lol. Framed them and gave them to my dad for his shop. He didn't even think there were any pictures of it left in existence. He also had his 86 Chevy Pickup painted the exact same color and it said "Short Stuff" on the car (reference to my ridiculously short mother - she's 4'11 and he's 6'3) So he had a bug shield air brushed to say Short Stuff on the Pickup too. Also, the Truck, Trailer, and Car all had matching wheels. It was all really well done.

No pictures, and I'm sure this will get buried, but I'll answer.

Dad still has his 68 Hemi Charger that he bought in 1972. When I was a kid (like 4 and up) I had a fascination with this car, even though it'd been parked since I was 2. (Plates last expired in 1988). I always wanted to see the stripe (black car, red bumble bee stripes). It was a treat that I would get after spending the day at the garage while he was servicing trucks.

Dad also has been in the transportation industry in some capacity since the late 70s, and at one point he owned several semis, and did all the maintenance himself on the weekends. So, during that period, not only did I get the treat of seeing the stripe on the car, but I also got to crawl around semis. That partially explains how I have a desk job, in health care, yet can rattle off facts about Freightliners and Kenworths, and why our old project trucks interest me.

When I was a wee lad, Dad had a friend that ran pro-stock cars, so I also spent time in the pits at the drags frequently on weekends.

And finally, when I was growing up, I had a neighbor that was meticulous about his cars. Always had a ratty beater, but in the garage always lurked an RX-7. A red RX-7. First it was an FC, and then when the FDs came out for 93, he had his in October of 92. He always let me crawl around and sit in the car, no matter how annoying I was.

So to answer the question, a combination of a 68 Charger, some early 90s Freightliners, and an FD RX-7.

That's why I have a pickup truck of my own. I don't need it but I always wanted one. For the most part it is my Grandpa that got me into all things mechanized, he also took me to where he worked and gave me tractor rides. My dad also helped, while not a car guy, he was all about military hardware. So when we lived on base he would show me around the various old machines on display. In short I'm not a car guy, exclusively, I am interested in just about all machinery.
